George Airey – Miles for Smiles and a Commendation Award

Date: 13th Dec 2024 Author: Mike Brown

Meet 8 year old George Airey from Gawsworth Cubs.
When George was just 2, he was diagnosed with a very rare heart condition called Large Sinus of Valsalva Aneurysm, found in less than 0.09% of the population. Although this condition often has no symptoms, it can lead to serious life-threatening complications. George needed complex and life-saving heart surgery. His diagnosis and extremely complex surgery at such a young age is very unique worldwide.
Thanks to the brilliant cardiac team at Alder Hey Hospital, George made a full recovery and now, 6 years later, he’s thriving!

He recently raised over £1000 funds for Alder Hey Children’s Charity through the Miles for Smiles challenge.
George said: “I want to thank Alder Hey for all the work they do to help poorly children. They helped me so much in 2018, I am so grateful for everything they did for me. I hope that no matter where you spend Christmas, you are surrounded by the people you love. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!”

In recognition of George’s courage and efforts to help other people, he was awarded with a District Commendation Award.     Well done George!
