MARK SHARPLEY

10132, Private, Mark Sharpley, 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.

Born in 1896 son of George and Sarah Ellen (nee, Shirley), Sharpley, of, 22 Cotton Street, Macclesfield, and elder brother of George who is also on the memorial at Barnswood. When Mark attested at Macclesfield 08/08/1914 he was working as a silk dryer; his army medical records show him to have been a man of 5 feet four and a half inches tall weighed 116lbs with a 36 inch chest measurement, grey eyes and fair hair.

Mark was initially posted to the 3rd Battalion Cheshire’s, he embarked with them with the B.E.F 26/05/1915 to France, he again embarked from Marseilles 24/10/1915 to Alexandria, arriving 30/10/15. His stay here was for 3 weeks, embarking for Salonika, 21/11/1915; it was then he transferred to the 2nd Battalion. In Salonika, Mark spent 5 weeks in hospital with malaria, 20 July 1916, he was killed in action Monday 15 April 1918 aged 21 years.

Private, Mark Sharpley has no known resting place and he is commemorated on the Dorian Memorial Greece
