2450, Private, William Pomfret, 1/7th Battalion, ‘C’ Company Cheshire Regiment.
Born 15 March 1887 at Macclesfield, son of John and Mary, (nee Ellis) Jane Pomfret of 70, Black Lane, Macclesfield. In 1911, William was living as a boarder at 32, Black Lane and working as a cotton weaver. The following year, 1912, in the spring, he married Bertha Holland.
William attested at Macclesfield, and after his training, he was drafted with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force to the Dardinelles, landing at Sulva Bay 09/08/1915. William survived for 2 days at Sulva Bay; he died of his wounds Wednesday 11 August 1915, aged 28 years.
Medals: British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Private, William Pomfret, is buried at Hill 10 Cemetery Sulva, Turkey.
