208654, Private, William Leigh, 22nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment.
Born in 1893 at Bollington, son of Arthur and Emma Leigh (nee Morgan),they lived at Mount Pleasant, Bollington then they moved to Church Street. William was educated at the Church School; he was also a member of the Boy Scouts. Prior to enlisting he was employed at Oak Bank Printing Works.
William attested in November 1914, at Manchester and after completing his initial basic training he was drafted to France 11/11/1915. William was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme 01/07/1916 he was aged 23
Medals: British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Private, William Leigh is buried at Dantzig Alley Cemetery, Mametz Somme, France.
