Norman Pickslay Clark

NORMAN PICKSLAY CLARK.

2nd Lieutenant, Norman Pickslay Clark, 7th Battalion, attached 2nd Battalion The Royal Munster Fusiliers, formerly 14th North Staffordshire Regiment and Prince of Wales’s Own The West Yorkshire Regiment.

Born in 1893 at Doncaster, Yorkshire, son of councillor and leather merchant, William and Louisa Morton, (nee, Rigby), Clark, of, 1, Thorne Road, Doncaster. Norman had two brothers, Noel Edward and Frederick William and a sister Winifred Mary. He was educated at Doncaster Grammar School, and he was also a very keen member of the Boy Scout movement.

At the age of 17 years he was a boarder with Mr Thomas Blackhurst at Cross Lane Farm, Mossley, Congleton, he was studying to be an accountant.

His theatre of conflict was the Somme; William was killed in action, Tuesday, 22 August 1916. His commanding officer wrote; “your boy was killed most gallantly leading an attack on the enemy trenches, he was detailed by his company commander to lead the second attack, but he asked to go first; he was hit by a rifle or machine gun bullet at close range, and died at once”.

Medals: 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

2nd Lieutenant, Norman Pickslay Clark is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
