THOMAS HULME

290909, Private, Thomas Hulme, 1/7th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, former number 3110.

Born in 1896 at Macclesfield, son of Sarah Jane Hulme, 58, Buxton Road, Macclesfield, (living with his grandmother). Thomas was educated at St Paul’s School, he was also an active member in the St Peter’s Boy Scout Troop. Prior to his enlistment Thomas was working as a cotton weaver, employed at Lower Heyes Mill.

Thomas attested in December 1914, at Macclesfield into the local Territorials. On completion of his training he was drafted with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force to Egypt. Later he was posted to the Western Front. The 7th Battalion, alongside the 4th Battalion were engaged in the action at Courtrai, 14th to 19t October 1918. The leading companies advanced on the right of the 4th Battalion. Although suffering somewhat from hostile strong points not touched by the initial bombardment, they reached both of their objectives up on time. Casualties were three officers, 117 others. Thomas was killed in action, Monday, 14 October 1918, aged 22 years.

Private, Thomas Hulme is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
