George Sharpley

GEORGE SHARPLEY

202540, Private, George Sharpley, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s’ Own Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.

Born in 1899 son of George and Sarah Ellen (nee, Shirley), Sharpley, of, 4 Cotton Street, Macclesfield. George was educated at Mill Street Wesleyan Day School under Mr. T. Hewitt; he was also associated with St Georges Baptist Chapel where he was a member of the choir. Prior to enlisting, George was serving an apprenticeship as a designer at the Park Lane Mill or Messrs Smale and Sons

George enlisted at Macclesfield, and had twelve months experience of army life before he was drafted to France. on August 6th, after completing his training at Chelmsford. His theatre of war was the Flanders Offensive; he was killed in action Thursday 4 October 1917 aged 19 years.

Medals: British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Private, George Sharpley has no known resting place and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen Belgium.
