291167, Private, Charles Dawson, 1/7th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, former number, 3724.

Born in 1894 at Macclesfield, son of Alfred and Harriet Ann, (nee, Bailey), Dawson, of, 9, Smelt Houses, Macclesfield. The 1911 census shows the family to be living at 67, Saville Street, and Charles was working as a silk embroiderer.

Charles enlisted at Macclesfield, and his theatre of war was the Egyptian campaign. The 7th Battalion were engaged in the battle at Jerusalem, and on the 14 December 1917, the 7th Battalion, who had been finding guards in Jerusalem, advanced through the line held by the 5th Welch, and seized a ridge in the face of heavy fire.

On the 17th the 7th attempted to capture Ras Ez Zamby, but were unsuccessful. It was captured by the 160th Brigade on the 21st. Charles died of wounds, Wednesday, 19 December 1917, aged 23 years.

Medals: British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Private, Charles Dawson is buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel/Palestine.
